Review: Stage West mines beloved comic strip Charlie Brown in light-hearted musical yyc yycarts

Photo, John WatsonCharlie is the everyman who just wants to manage a winning team, score a touchdown, keep his kite from getting tangled in a tree, get a special someone to notice him, get recognized with cards on special occasions and be motivated to complete a task. LaPalme gives his Charlie just a hint of an awkward gait and sad sack expression plus some hesitation in his speech.
When it comes to authority, Sally takes no prisoners. She’ll argue with teachers over the grades they give her, confounding them with her convoluted logic, and Gibbons exudes confidence in her every stance and, especially in her song My New Philosophy, where she commandeers what everyone else thinks.
Linus is the philosopher with a security blanket who overanalyzes everything, as Weafer shows in The Book Report on Peter Rabbit number. Weafer is also the show’s choreographer, and he turns Linus’s song My Blanket and Me into one of the show’s biggest production numbers where every cast member gets a security blanket colour-coordinated with their wardrobe.
