The film from French-Cambodian director Davy Chou takes viewers deep into South Korean culture
Freddie clearly, in one standoffish phone call with her adopted mother, has problems in France. She was raised in a rural area there and has now escaped to Paris, where she lives alone. In Seoul, she makes one good friend, Tena , who is fluent in French and works at the hostel where Freddie is staying. They hang out together, and Tena is her translator when Freddie meets her birth father for the first time — a tense and awkward encounter to say the least.
But even Tena gets tired of Freddie’s act. When Freddie acts erratically and drinks too much, Tena tells her, “You’re really a sad person.”Chou’s beautifully shot film emphasizes geography and place, so that Freddie's inner journey becomes a physical one as well. The film doesn’t just take place in Seoul but in smaller cities such as Gunsan and Jeonju, and rugged rural landscapes.
Park, acting for the first time, has a difficult task and rises to it. Long stretches of her performance are wordless, yet she brings deep empathy to the role. Freddie’s birth name, Yeon-hee, translates as “docile and joyous.” The former she is certainly not. The latter may yet come.
