Even if you know Harper Lee’s original ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by heart, the new adaptation playing in S.F. will surprise you.
Richard Thomas brings out the decency as well as the failing of Atticus Finch om “To Kill a Mockingbird.”Harper Lee forever captured the dark side of life in small-town Alabama in her masterpiece “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Playwright Aaron Sorkin, famed for “The West Wing,” blows the dust off the classic 1960 novel in this soaring Broadway adaptation.
Sorkin and Sher clearly respect the original text but they are also willing to probe its ambiguities. Atticus Finch famously holds out hope that the better angels of the jury will triumph as he defends the unjustly accused Tom Robinson in court. Williams gilds Calpurnia with equal measures weariness and grace. The woman has seen far too much to believe in fairness but she fights to the teeth to preserve the children’s right to their innocence.
For his part, Thomas, a stage veteran best remembered for TV’s “The Waltons,” deftly charts the character’s journey into shadows and doubt.
