🎬 FilmReview This crime-thriller-rom-com tries to be too many movies at once. | ✍️ nberlat

is really two movies in one. The first is a genre crime film that owes more than a little to the Coen brothers’. Micah Stock as Jay Moore does a very creditable job in the William H. Macy role as a failing Subway franchise owner whose petty corruption lands him in an escalating moral quagmire. Soon his wife Maggie is dead, as is another woman also named Maggie Moore , and the police are closing in.

The suspense plot is handled well enough; the looming Happy Anderson makes a very menacing contract killer, and the plot is satisfyingly knotty. The better of the two, though, is a rom-com featuring Police Chief Jordan Sanders and Jay Moore’s neighbor Rita Grace . Sanders is a widower and Grace has just experienced a messy divorce; they’re both weathered and reticent, trying to see how or whether their hearts, and other parts, can fit together again.

The problem is that the decent Coen brothers knock-off and the better-than-decent rom-com don’t really work together. You can craft a bleak parable about human venality and cruelty or you can tell a heartwarming story about the miracle of human connection. But when you try to do both at once, it feels jarring. The two, in this case, trip each other up. Neither is a bad film, but Slattery would have done better, I think, to pick one.delivered straight to your inbox Monday through Friday.
