Rosebud Theatre\u0027s The Syringa Tree is a powerful indictment of South Africa\u0027s apartheid regime that lasted more than 40 years.

This one-woman show, seamlessly acted by Katharine Venour, extolls the triumph of love over hate, goodness over evil, and fellowship over separation, as South Africa’s regime is viewed through the eyes of an innocent white child. In 100 minutes, Venour plays 24 characters of varying ages, races and sexes, but, in particular, Elizabeth, the six-year-old daughter of Isaac, a Jewish doctor, and Eugenie, his Catholic wife.

Director Morris Ertman has chosen to stage The Syringa Tree in an aisle setting with audiences on both sides which makes for some rather tricky blocking. No matter where one is seated, there are times when you’ll be viewing Venour’s profile or even her back. This configuration makes for variety in the staging and prevents the play from being static. It keeps the play from feeling like storytelling, and Venour is beautifully conscious of including as many viewers as possible at all times.
