‘Boy vs Fly’ is a buzzing good time for Fringe kids and parents alike
At first glance, “Boy vs Fly” might seem like your standard Fringe kids’ show: a charming young protagonist has irredeemably goofy parents, a lofty-but-someday-attainable goal, and an obstacle too big to surmount alone.
But “Boy vs Fly” finds its footing in the details. Our hero Dean Bean has a wacky dad with a penchant for gourmet food. The elusive slapshot is just out of reach as Dean yearns to join his school’s hockey team. And the obstacle haunting the Bean family? A mischievous fly, decked out head-to-toe in Toronto streetwear.
“Boy vs Fly” feels like an episode of a bizarre and at times poignant children’s TV show, with slapstick humour and physicality for kids and subtle innuendos for parents — Dean Bean’s mom and dad poke a little fun at some parenting clichés, but never at the expense of the story or the lessons learned within.
To top it off, the whole shebang is soundtracked by a brilliant, live piano, which reacts in real time to the hijinks unfolding onstage. Music director Dewi Minden transitions seamlessly from underscoring to sound effects from behind her keyboard, and the effect is magic. Groundbreaking drama it is not, but “Boy vs Fly” is a sweet and breezy 35 minutes of fun. Brought to life by a cast of improv pros , you’re sure to chuckle as you remember the high-stakes happenings of your own childhood.
