A magnificent revival of a much-loved classic of Northern theatre is a triumph, says Rob Williams

Shelagh Delaney's bittersweet paean to working class resilience and humour has fared much better than many of the bemused reviews that met its initial performances in 1958.

Unable to properly connect with her daughter except through banter and admonishment. Halfpenny does a wonderful job of showing the layers of the character, without ever really letting us feel any sympathy for her. Halfpenny's Helen is disdainful, haughty, overbearing and prideful but we still believe she loves her daughter.

The wonderful central performances are complemented by an excellent David Moorst as Geoffrey, in a heart-breaking and thoughtful piece of acting that starts off comic and becomes something much more interesting. Andrew Sheridan and Obadiah as Peter and Jimmie respectively acquit themselves well.
