Bishop Samuel Molefe, a former leader of the Apostolic Faith Mission, is taking legal action against the church for unpaid salaries, severance pay, and leave compensation.
A retired bishop is taking legal action against his former church, the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa (AFM), over unpaid dues . Bishop Samuel Molefe alleges that the church owes him severance pay, unpaid salaries, leave compensation, and a 13th cheque accumulated between 1987 and 2017. While his initial contract ended in 2017 at age 65, it was extended until June 2023 when he handed over leadership to Apostle Lesego Molokoane.
The case is scheduled to be heard by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) on January 17, 2025, in Mahikeng. This follows a prior attempt by the AFM to challenge the CCMA's jurisdiction in the matter. A church member spoken to by TimesLIVE stated that Bishop Molefe never raised concerns about unpaid funds during his employment or during the official handover of his duties. They claim that the issue only surfaced after his retirement from the church. Private attempts to resolve the dispute between Molefe and the AFM failed, leading Molefe to approach the CCMA for intervention. This case has sparked divided opinions on social media, with some users supporting Bishop Molefe's right to receive the owed payments, while others argue that his work was dedicated to serving God, not financial gain. This isn't the first time religious figures in South Africa have made headlines for financial controversies
