Following a July battle between Tuareg rebels and the army in Tinzaouaten, Mali, the town now faces severe health crises, including diphtheria and malaria outbreaks, as well as drone attacks.

Members of the MINUSMA Guinean contingent pulled their stranded escort vehicle during a logistic convoy from Gao to Kidal, Mali on February 17, 2017. The northern town of Tinzaouaten, home to disease outbreaks and drone attacks following a July battle between Tuareg rebels and the army, has seen many residents flee to Algeria.

Tuareg rebels control Tinzaouaten, where security roadblocks have restricted access to essential supplies like medicines and bed nets needed to combat diphtheria and malaria. Since the July conflict, multiple drone strikes have killed dozens, including children and doctors. Mali declared a state of national disaster in August due to extensive flooding, exacerbating the health crisis. Doctor Moussa Bagayoko reported a diphtheria epidemic and an increase in malaria cases, with severe anaemia and neuro-malaria presenting significant challenges. Vaccinations and anti-malarial medication are urgently needed, alongside improved access to essential supplies
