Researchers from Amsterdam UMC, in collaboration with eight other Dutch hospitals, have shown that being increasingly restrictive in preventiveNew England Journal of MedicineThe research led by Amsterdam UMC is a collaboration between critical care doctors and hematologists, both of whom are often confronted with issues related to blood transfusion. One of these issues was the focus of the research.
"We therefore entered this study with the expectation that, just as in other situations for which this was already known, we could safely omit a platelet transfusion altogether. But the outcome was different. Patients with very few platelets actually have less bleeding if they are transfused prior to CVC placement," adds Vlaar.
A CVC is also often used in the treatment of hematology patients, but patients with hematological disorders have a completely different cause of the low platelet count than patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
