Football Association of Ireland director of football Marc Canham said the governing body had earlier this year identified Hallgrímsson - who also coached Jamaica - as "our number one candidate". England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley, a former Republic of Ireland midfielder, emerged as the FAI's initial preferred candidate but ruled himself out of contention in March by which time John O'Shea has been named interim boss.
