The party gathers for its conference this weekend after a defeat and a defection. Can it bounce back?

If there is a Labour government next year, the party will argue that’s all the more reason to send SNP MSPs to Edinburgh as a counterweight. If the Tories were to oust Starmer from No 10 at a general election in 2028 or 2029, some of them may never again want a situation where Labour uses its Scottish seats to form a government.
