Just this week, police charged two high school students with public incitement of hatred, mischief, and criminal harassment after a December incident in which they allegedly painted a swastika on the floor and harassed Jewish students with Nazi salutes. Robin Browne of the 613/819 Black Hub activist organization said hate crimes against Blacks were probably under-reported because of the suspicion many in the Black community have about police. Of 1,723 reported crimes motivated by races or ethnicity, 642, or more than one-third, targeted members of Black communities, an increase of six per cent over 2020. Arab or West Asian communities saw a 46-per-cent rise in reported crimes, to 184 last year from 126.
