Bear was injured in the closing seconds of Canada’s 4-1 win over Finland at the men’s World Hockey Championship on May 25. The cameras caught him tangling with a Finnish player and immediately skating off the ice, knocking him out of the rest of the medal round. Canada went on to beat Germany for gold.Bear completed his one-year deal that he originally signed with Carolina last summer with a $2.2 million AAV.
Bear averaged 18:32 in ice time this year for the Canucks, a big step up from his 16:05 with Carolina last year. He had a career-high 21:58 in average ice time with the Edmonton Oilers in 2019-20, his first full season with the club. Bear is set to become a restricted free agent this summer. They’ll likely look to know more about Bear’s long-term health before making a decision on a contract, but have to qualify him by 2:00 PM PT on June 30.
The Canucks have five rostered defensemen under contract this summer: Quinn Hughes, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Tyler Myers, Filip Hronek and Guillaume Brisebois. Tucker Poolman spent the season on LTIR, but has a deal until 2025. The team also has a host of young defensemen signed in the AHL, including Elias Pettersson, Jett Woo and Cole McWard.
