Section 27 warns of health and financial impacts due to contraceptive shortages
Civil society organisation Section 27 is concerned about the shortages of contraceptives in the country. In the Stop Stockouts Project’s “Contraceptive Supply Chain Report”, almost all women and girls surveyed in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape did not receive the contraceptives they requested.
Section 27 senior legal researcher, Tendai Mafuma says this is now causing severe health and financial implications. “We looked at three provinces which were the Eastern Cape, North West, and KZN, basically, we found that there were many instances where people went to these facilities, they could not receive the contraceptives that they needed, firstly, the health implications not getting medicines that you need and the other is financial implications where multiple kids where they are taken out of work at these facilities getting the medicines that they need,” Mafuma explains.
