In 'Mi Carnal Frank,' Juan Tejeda depicts his brother has a man who never backed down from a fight -- or a chance to help others.
San Antonio U.S. Rep. Frank Tejeda Jr. was a fighter. He settled disputes with his fists in school, defended our country in Vietnam, and as a public servant fought for Latino rights, political representation and equal access to public services, fair housing, quality education and environmental justice. His star was on the rise in Democratic politics, beginning in 1977. But in 1997, at 51, he succumbed to brain cancer.
Tejeda’s memoir is a layered tribute to a paradoxical man, a caring man whose acts of kindness are still coming to light these many years after his death but who is as well known for an almost legendary scrappiness that started in his youth and never wavered during his time in city and state politics.
