Upon return, the talented midfielder was still unable to find his top gear as he built his fitness back up to full power. But Hatate’s brilliance for the opener against Killie and a first goal of the term from open play seemed to ignite him. His joy at netting such a special strike was evident and flourished from that second onwards to produce a virtuoso performance.
Yet, as much as his ability shone, it would have been his application that delighted Rodgers as much as his craft. The sight of Hatate hunting down possession in the final stages of the match right in front of the gaffer’s technical area proved he’s taken advice on board. Rodgers revealed after the Killie win that he had sat with Hatate in the aftermath of the Champions League loss to Lazio and gone through key elements of his game.
Enjoyment radiated out of Hatate throughout his Man of the Match display. There was a smile on his face as he put the Ayrshire side to the sword and there was also an impish grin on display as he spoke afterwards. The signing of a new-long term contract at the club will have helped put any lingering worries about his immediate future aside.
