I’m glad I didn’t have someone hovering over me even if it would have made life easier in the moment
Instead, I had to muddle on, eating something I called couscous soup most nights, occasionally crying down the phone to my actual mum, and learning the hard way that vitamins, sleep, and budgeting are worth thinking about after all.
I say “hard way”, but everything’s relative; in the cushioned environment of uni halls, complete with porters and lecturers and cradled by the structure of an institution, idiots like me were provided with a safe-ish space to be totally crap, and then to get slightly better – hopefully in time for second year, when the independence typically ratchets up another notch with a move off campus.
If I’d rented a “mom”, I might have had a smoother ride – but if we accept that adulthood is generally synonymous with autonomy, services like college concierges aren’t solving a problem so much as kicking it down the road. One day, we will all have to wash our own socks; the sooner someone gets to grips with that, the better.
