CIVH has acquired Dark Fibre Africa and Vumatel and has connected 650,000 homes to date, with plans for a further 850,000 in the next five years
An SA telecoms company backed by investment firm Remgro plans to expand its high-speed broadband network after completing a R16bn debt restructuring this week.
However, as the price of fixend-line internet comes down and more customers seek faster connection speeds than those offered by 4G mobile technology, the chance to grab a bigger slice of the fibre market has been seized by Community Investment Ventures Holdings . The FTTX Council Africa, the regional arm of global fibre industry body, says the number of SA households with a fibre connection surged to 280,000 in 2018 from 89,000 in 2017, while the number of “homes passed”, or the potential number of premises a service provider can hook up to its network, more than doubled to 933,000 in the same period.
The debt restructuring and refinancing, joint-led by Standard Bank, sees CIHV’s debt combined into one package that the company says will allow it to “move cash around the group and utilise the debt where the capex opportunities are”.
