This time, the new show is based on letters written during the Second World War – more than 3,000 of them, in fact, ranging from scratchy handwriting on brittle paper, photocopies and transcripts of same, to published books of war-time correspondence and online troves of archival material. But Mulholland also found letters that illustrate the struggle of Black and Indigenous soldiers. They faced discrimination from the moment they stepped up to volunteer, and were often confined to lower army ranks because they weren’t considered eligible for promotion.

“This was a part of history I didn’t know much about, I’m embarrassed to say,” Mulholland admits. “This young woman sent notes to all of her classmates, and there’s a collection of letters they wrote back to her. Hearing teenagers talk about having to be beet farmers and missing the mountains and missing high school, and having some really interesting chats about democracy but also, ‘Oh I heard this song on the radio and I thought of you.

For Mulholland, one of the most rewarding parts of the project was digging into the letters written by her maternal grandfather, whom she was close to, during his overseas service.
