NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POSTGLACE BAY — Jimmy MacNeil Sr. talks proudly of his son who died while serving for the Canadian military in Afghanistan in 2010.

"I'm really overwhelmed for all they do for Jimmy. It's unreal," said his father."They even named the field out there after him." "The kids are playing and having fun, but I want to make sure my son knows about Jimmy and what happened to him," O'Neill said. At home in Glace Bay, his girlfriend has been looking for a house, said MacNeil Sr. At 10 years service, his son was going to be transferred to Sydney after the end of the current Afghanistan tour."Being a mom, it makes you realize that this could happen to anyone," she said."If this happened to my son or any family member of mine, I'd want them to be remembered."

"Being a part of Glace Bay, we have tight bonds to the community, even if Jimmy didn't go to school he is still a part of the community," said Steve MacNeil, a teacher at OVEC and coach of the AA girls basketball team. OVEC students have been quick to offer help from working the canteen or popcorn stands to cheering their teams on during games.
