The remains of Navy pilot Paul Charvet were returned to his family in Anchorage over 50 years after he disappeared during the Vietnam War. “It’s hard to even put into words the feeling ... that he’s truly here after all these years,” said his sister.

A Navy honor guard transfers the casket for Paul Charvet, a Navy pilot who disappeared during the Vietnam War in 1967, from an Alaska Airlines jet to a waiting hearse on January 26, 2022. Paul Charvet planned to retire from the Navy after his last tour in Vietnam. Shute said he had served two previous tours there. “That kind of gave us all closure to a point because that was as much as we thought we’d ever get,” she said. Lorraine Charvet, left, and Dona Re' Shute take pictures as the Alaska Airlines 737 carrying the remains of their brother, Paul Charvet, arrive at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport on January 26, 2022.

Passengers watch as the casket for Paul Charvet is transported from an Alaska Airlines jet in Anchorage on January 26, 2022.
