Purim, a Jewish festival that begins at sundown on March 23 in 2024, includes a reading of the Megillah, or scroll, of Esther. People also attend and wear costumes to Purim “spiels,” pun-filled parodies of well-known movies and popular songs, to tell the story of Queen Esther and her Uncle Mordechai’s plan to save Jews from the plotting of the evil Haman. Hamantaschen, a three-cornered pastry with traditional poppy seed filling or many other sweet or savory fillings, is a Purim treat.
