Will Smith has some special memories at Minute Maid Park. The lefthanded reliever joins the Astros after a trade with the Braves looking for a fix to a season gone awry. Will Smith’s search for a solution has ended in Houston, a place renowned for its pitching reclamation projects.
“He said ‘You can go there and these guys can fix you,’” Smith said Tuesday. “Houston is spitting out pitchers left and right that dominate. So hopefully they can fix me.” Life as a setup man has not been ideal. Smith is walking 5.1 batters per nine innings — more than at any point in his major league career — and has seen his whiff rate drop four points below his career average.
Smith’s arsenal is predicated around a four-seam fastball and slider with an occasional curveball. Smith is still generating chase outside the strike zone at an elite level — opponents are chasing around 35 percent of the time against him — but his inability to miss bats in the strike zone is problematic.
