Former Chairman, Russian human rights organisation Memorial and winner of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize,Russian propaganda is eager to show Africa and the rest of the world that Russia speaks with one voice and the Russian public is united behind Putin’s government and bloody war. Yet many from Russia--including Alexander Cherkasov, former chair of the Russian human rights organisation Memorial, one of three recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, don’t support the war.

The fight of human rights defenders like Cherkasov--for equality, freedom and dignity -- has much in common with the anti-colonial, anti-Apartheid freedom struggles of Africa in the twentieth century and with the struggles of African human rights defenders for democracy and social justice today.
