As part of Epic Games’ Virtual Production Week, Reel FX gave a behind the scenes look today at how they are using the Unreal Video Game Engine to animate their Netflix series,Unreal Engine has been used in television and film before, notably for visual effects in Lucasfilm’s, but Reel FX is using the game engine to create characters, environments, and assets ahead of time to streamline the animation process.

While many have tried to use video game engines, like Unity or Unreal Engine, for animation in the past, Reel FX is the first to create an innovative production animation pipeline that utilizes the Unreal Game Engine to visualize and render every aspect of the show. Reel FX’s groundbreaking use of the game engine combines live-action techniques and traditional tools makes animation more accessible.

Mark Andrews directs this 3D animated action-comedy about two robot brothers, Shiny and Thunder, as they fight off the Kaiju that threaten the world. Reel FX developed and produced this Netflix animated series, created by Executive Producers Victor Maldonado and Alfredo Torres. After the characters and environments are created in the Unreal Engine, Andrews and his DP Enrico Targetti film motion capture actors on a stage using a virtual camera. “We get on stage, and there is a chance to see [the scene] in action again and rewrite on the stage,” says Andrews. This live-action approach to animation is made possible by Unreal Engine’s ability to render the characters in real-time.

“The biggest thing the virtual production allows us to do is to be really playful,” says Reel FX’s Unreal Operator Rey Jarrell. “You have this freedom to allow the directors and the actors to just play and see what’s available to them.”Click on the video above to watch the behind the scenes footage and a sneak peek of the animated series.
