Padres hitless after Jurickson Profar hits game-tying home run in first; Matt Waldron turns in best start in woeful turn through rotation
The Padres have myriad problems. It can be argued that it is a toss up as to which is their biggest. Their No.2 and No.4 hitters all have offensive numbers well below what their salaries and past performance suggest they should be. In Monday night’s 5-2 loss to the Reds, the Padres went 8⅔ innings without a hit between Jurickson Profar leading off the bottom of the first with a game-tying home run and Jake Cronenworth's two-out double in the ninth.
Where the finale of their series in Denver was decided when the Rockies scored six runs in the eighth inning, the past four games have seen the Padres down early. The Padres trailed before coming to bat in the first inning for the fifth time in their past seven home games when De La Cruz, the Reds’ second batter, hit a sinker Waldron left on the middle of the strike zone into the visitors bullpen a projected 443 feet from home plate.
