Red Bull chief Christian Horner says the team 'accept the penalties begrudgingly', but the reality is the authorities have not been stringent enough

The cost cap was supposed to be Formula One’s new battle ground. Whilst it reined in the massive spends associated with Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari, which topped $300m at the height of the big budget insanity, the smaller teams struggle to reach the spending limit. Cue the cheers at Alfa Romeo-branded Sauber when the Audi deal was announced for 2026.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown said: “If the FIA is to be most effective and its punishments serve as a lesson to others when rules are broken in this way, the sanctions have to be much stronger in the future. We hope the lessons learned through this process will mean all teams have a clear understanding of the rules in order to avoid any future breaches.”“We accept the penalties begrudgingly,” he said.

Ferrari team principal Mattea Binotto estimates a $1m dollar overspend is worth 0.1 secs a lap. If he is right the maths suggest a gain of almost 0.2 seconds in 2021. The value of the advantage carried over in to this year and next might be even greater.
