For the sixth time since the advent of democratic and all-inclusive elections in South Africa in 1994, the nation will gather at various polling stations across the country to take part in what is regarded as the most contested election in years.

But how have the ANC and its political contenders fared in the previous democratic elections since 1994?1. 1994 National election The three runner-up parties were the Inkatha Freedom Party led by Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Freedom Front led by Constand Viljoen and the Democratic Party led by Zach de Beer, which obtained 2,058,294 votes and 43 seats, 424,555 votes and 9 seats, and 338,426 votes and 7 seats respectively.
