The construction of the Town Hall roundabout and the underpass changed this part of town forever, but around a century ago it was a rather more tranquil scene at this road junction.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the Watford Museum archive and this week we recall this view of the Four Cross Roads. The museum's volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said:"The Four Cross Roads was at the top of the High Street – roughly where the pedestrian underpass is today. The road straight ahead is St Albans Road."One of the large houses at the cross roads was Little Nascot, shown on the left of this picture.
"Originally the house was a private residence, it was later used by Shirley House School and in 1919 it was purchased by the council and used for a period as a children's clinic."The house no longer exists as this is where the underpass roadway runs."
