Fears that Africa would be the next Covid-19 hot spot have not materialised as the continent seems to have been affected only moderately.

There is reason for hope in its response to Covid-19, states new research from Oxford’s Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science in collaboration with the African Research Network.

“Accordingly, they now have some of the largest numbers of confirmed cases and deaths throughout Africa.” When predicting the impact of Covid-19 on the continent, however, the number of reported cases does not tell the whole story, say the researchers. “Most African countries have over-burdened health-care systems and given the low socio-economic status in most of African cities, mass quarantines may mean people will starve, as many already struggle to find food on a daily basis
