READER LETTER | Most Struggle heroes and heroines forgotten: Communities remain in incubators of forgotten heroes and heroines of our liberation Struggle who remain impoverished and are left to die like paupers.

It saddens me to observe how the appointments in municipal posts are informed by closer proximity to leaders, most of them also peacetime martyrs who only got recognised through their ability to quote Stalin, Karl Marx etc.

I fought for freedom, was detained under the state of emergency and took part in underground activities of the then banned ANC but no one remembers. I'm not insinuating that Struggle credentials should be equated with qualifications for a job but surely the nation should take care of its liberators. The miniskirt-flaunting chief whips and speakers of some municipalities should bury their heads in shame because their roles are only to attend conferences and post themselves wearing their parties' golf shirts while real heroes and heroines wallow in self-pity in the dusty streets of their communities.Register or sign in now.
