After Murray signed his four-year, $25-million deal with the Senators in October 2020 and with two Stanley Cup titles to his name — he played a pivotal role in stopping the Senators run to the Stanley Cup final in 2017 — he never found his footing here.
Murray has played in only 22 games with Toronto, posting a 12-7-2 record, 2.92 average and .903 save percentage, while dealing with more injuries. He was originally expected to start against the Senators on Jan. 29 before aggravating an ankle problem. The most pressing question for the Maple Leafs as they prepare to once again face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs is whether Murray or Ilya Samsonov will go head to head against the Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy.
Remarkably, the Senators have used 11 goaltenders since Smith took over as head coach for the 2019-20 season. Forsberg was a salvation after being plucked off waivers, putting a Band-Aid over the Murray bleeding late in the 2020-21 season. Last season, he was outstanding, earning himself the club’s Masterton Trophy nomination. Meanwhile, in the internal prospect battle in 2021, the Senators protected Filip Gustavsson over Joey Daccord, who was, in turn, lost to the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft.
