The RCMP isn’t investigating any of the allegations of interference by foreign states during Canada’s last election, top security officials said Wednesday.
It’s an issue that’s been on the political agenda for years, but given fresh focus in recent weeks in light of reporting that laid out some starkThe Globe and Mail and Global TV have separately reported several specific details. Among them: China being behind the nomination of one Liberal party candidate ahead of the 2019 vote; cash donations going to certain candidates but then paid back to donors; and intimidating campaigns against newcomers to Canada.
Reports from the Conservative party to security officials during the 2021 election of potential examples of foreign interference also weren’t substantiated by security officials, said Jody Thomas, Trudeau’s national and security intelligence adviser. Thomas told MPs that while security officials were definitely aware of foreign interference activities happening during the election, gathering enough information for the RCMP to move ahead“Often the information that CSIS obtains can’t be used for criminal charges because it’s not evidence,” Thomas said.
But that hasn’t stopped calls for one. At Wednesday’s committee, the NDP gave notice they will move a formal motion calling for the set up of an inquiry. Poilievre has also said a recent review of government efforts to monitor interference during the election can’t be trusted because the author was once part of the Trudeau Foundation, a charity set up in memory of Trudeau’s father, and former prime minister, Pierre Trudeau.
But, Rosenberg stressed, determining what activities rise to the level of threatening the outcome of the election is a challenge, and hard to parse in the moment as numerous other factors could also influence people’s votes.
