RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki is expected to take the stand Tuesday at the inquiry into the worst mass shooting in Canadian history.

HALIFAX—The nation’s top Mountie is expected to take the stand Tuesday at the inquiry into the worst mass shooting in Canadian history, where she is expected to face questions at some point about whether she tried to interfere with the Nova Scotia RCMP’s investigation.

Those allegations came to light in June, when the handwritten notes of Darren Campbell — then the senior N.S. Mountie in charge of the investigation — were released by the inquiry. According to those notes, Lucki told the N.S. contingent that she’d promised then-public safety minister Bill Blair and the Prime Minister’s Office that those details would be released.“The commissioner accused us of disrespecting her by not following her instructions.”

On Monday, however, at the Mass Casualty Commission inquiry into the shootings, Lee Bergerman — now retired, but in April 2020 the commanding officer of the N.S. Mounties — backed up Campbell’s version of events, characterizing Lucki as “angry” on the teleconference.
