Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner and Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt clash in BBC Election Debate The Cabinet minister and Navy reservist, representing the Conservatives in Friday’s BBC debate, said it was right that Mr Sunak had apologised.
For the Tories, the day had already been overshadowed by the backlash over Mr Sunak’s decision to leave the D-Day 80th anniversary events in Normandy to record a television interview. Ms Mordaunt – who is facing an uphill battle to win re-election in Portsmouth North – said she did not want the issue to become a “political football”.
During the seven-way BBC debate, the Conservatives and Labour were accused of being too similar in their policy Ms Mordaunt repeated the Prime Minister’s claim that Labour would raise taxes by £2,000 a household, despite accusations that the figure was misleading. She highlighted that Ms Rayner had previously voted against the renewing of the Trident programme in 2016.
