Texas Rangers sports news and analysis. Baseball updates, scores, schedules and stats on the Rangers.

Heim was a fourth-round draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles, one with questions about if his bat would ever click in the big leagues.

“He has average raw power with loft and will probably be not better than a fringe-average hitter,” the report, published sometime prior to the 2013 MLB Draft, read. “Scouts love his work ethic, but questions about his bat mean he won’t go higher than the sixth round.”Those who’ve read the headline to this story might’ve already chuckled. Let’s not spoil it quite yet.

Heim started the second-most games at catcher in baseball this regular season, behind only Philadelphia’s JT Realmuto . Mitch Garver is second on the Rangers in games caught at 27. Heim has started 16 straight games behind the plate dating back to the regular season. Only two catchers in baseball — San Francisco Patrick Bailey and Heim’s teammate Austin Hedges — framed pitches better than Heim in 2023.

Right, about that time off: Heim’s season crumbled into jeopardy in late July when he suffered a left wrist tendon sprain against the Houston Astros. He missed just 14 games, though there was fear that he’d need to undergo season-ending surgery. Heim said Wednesday that it’s still to be determined whether he needs surgery in the offseason, and that he’ll meet with medical specialists again once the Rangers are finished playing.

Police released surveillance video late Wednesday that shows several people walking in a grassy area. They are seeking the identities of “persons of interest” in Tuesday night’s shooting. Police Commissioner Richard Worley has said at least two people opened fire during a dispute between two groups. But Worley says preliminary evidence indicates the shooters were targeting one person, who wasn’t among the five victims. All five are expected to survive. The shooting unfolded as people walked from the Mister and Miss Morgan State coronation ceremony to a ball.
