It is believed to be the first public appearance for Gonzalez at a Rangers game since 2004 when he was a member of the Kansas City Royals.
Unlike many former players, Gonzalez, 53, has kept a relative low profile in Major League Baseball since his retirement after the 2005 season. He returned to Puerto Rico and has more recently. He was the assistant hitting coach for the Puerto Rican entry in the World Baseball Classic and is a coach with the Puerto Rican national team.
As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Gonzalez will sign autographs from 5:15 to 6:15 on the concourse. He will also receive his Rangers Hall of Fame blazer from Tom Grieve and will throw out the first pitch to former teammate José Guzman. Gonzalez was inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame, but was reluctant at the time to participate in the ceremonies.Gonzalez spent his first 11 years in the majors with the Rangers, winning MVPs in 1996 and 1998.
After losing three playoff series in four years to the New York Yankees, the Rangers traded Gonzalez to Detroit following the 1999 season. He spent one season with the Tigers, one with Cleveland and then rejoined the Rangers for two years while struggling with injuries. He played 33 games for Kansas City in 2004 and one game for Cleveland in 2005.
