Rami Malek has already played musical icon Freddie Mercury. Now he's reportedly set to play movie icon Buster Keaton.
Rami Malek will reportedly play a silent movie legend in a new limited series from The Batman director Matt Reeves. Malek has an Oscar on his resume thanks to his memorable portrayal of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in 2018’s blockbuster biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. The star then racked up another huge acting achievement by playing a Bond villain, portraying the evil Safin alongside Daniel Craig’s 007 in 2021’s No Time To Die.
But Malek’s next high-profile role won’t win him any Oscars, nor will it see him turning on the villainy. Instead, the star will reportedly sign on to play legendary silent movie comedian Buster Keaton in a limited series for Warner Bros. Television. Adding extra intrigue to the project is the report that The Batman director Reeves will not only produce the show but will helm it himself.
There have of course been plenty of documentaries about Keaton over the years, including 2018’s The Great Buster: A Celebration and 1987’s three-part series Buster Keaton: A Hard Act To Follow. And there was one factually dubious classic Hollywood-era fictional movie about the star, The Buster Keaton Story with Donald O’Conner. But Keaton has not yet been tackled in a significant way in the modern era.
There has of course been a major feature film biopic about Keaton’s biggest rival Charlie Chaplin, who was portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in 1992’s Oscar-nominated Chaplin. Indeed, Chaplin’s reputation over the decades has tended to overshadow that of Keaton, though artists as diverse as Mel Brooks, Johnny Knoxville and Richard Lewis have all cited Keaton as a huge influence on their work. Not to mention how fascinating Keaton’s lifestory is for anyone interested in the history of entertainment.
