Editorial | Ramaphosa's Parliament speech: A blast from the not-so-distant past
South Africans would have been forgiven for remembering the lyrics of Sunshine Anderson’s Heard it All Before when they were listening to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s state of the nation address this week.
For the past six years, our nation has been subjected to promises from the head of state. The words are different and the cadence varies, but the message is ultimately the same: The speech delivered this week was a reflection of the priorities agreed on in the first multiparty lekgotla a week ago. Much of it reflected the policies and priorities of the majority party, but the views of the new coalition partners were evident. It was not a shoot-the-lights-out speech, but it was adequate. Its most important aspect was that it laid the groundwork for the functioning of the GNU over the next five years.
