Over 3000 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will be deployed across all nine provinces.

This is to prevent and combat crime, and maintain and preserve law and order, under Operation Prosper.President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said members of the SANDF will, in cooperation with the SAPS, conduct an intensified anti-criminality operation against illegal mining across all provinces, from 28 October 2023 until 28 April 2024.“The President set out the employment in a letter to the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces , Amos Masondo,” he said.

A number of communities especially in Gauteng have been negatively affected by the illegal mining with some moving from their homes to more safer places due to ongoing violence between zama zamas.SABC loses more than R450 million, say reports
