President Cyril Ramaphosa used his response to the debate on his State of the Nation Address to urge political parties in South Africa to prioritize national unity and progress. CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa utilized his response to the debate on his State of the Nation Address as a call for political parties across the spectrum to prioritize nation-building. He emphasized that the Government of National Unity (GNU) embodied the best hope for South Africa to overcome its myriad challenges.
Ramaphosa stated that in these times of profound uncertainty, exacerbated by global geopolitical events, seeking solutions to the country's problems from foreign sources was not the appropriate course of action. The president asserted that despite the differences that emerged during the two days of debate, he remained convinced that there was a shared desire to construct a nation that belonged to all its inhabitants. He emphasized that, contrary to the criticisms of detractors, the ten parties within the GNU were collaborating effectively. 'We have demonstrated our willingness to put aside our political differences and work for the common good of all South Africans,' he stated. In an apparent allusion to actions taken against the country by the United States, Ramaphosa delivered this message: 'We will not be deterred from the path we have charted. I wish to reiterate that we will also not be intimidated by anyone, within or outside the country, from our determination to work together.' Ramaphosa underscored that a national dialogue would yield concrete processes to address problems and ultimately strengthen the nation
