The event was one of many planned across the country as part of Mother’s Day of Action, calling for the reinstatement of a national assault weapons ban. Local supporters are also asking for changes to be made in the Texas Legislature. “I acknowledge that while I wasn’t physically injured or worse, but I am emotionally and mentally impacted by this,” Rodriguez said. “I, as well as hundreds of others in this community, could have been hurt … had the first responding officer not been there.”
Kat Vargas, a Moms Demand Action volunteer, said about two weeks before the shooting she was at the state Capitol, testifying that her husband, an Allen firefighter, was “training not to prevent shootings, but to arrive to dead bodies, and that is what happened Saturday.”that the shooting was not shocking, but that it is “extremely surreal to be going through this,” and that it has impacted her and other volunteers.
