The captain of one of those ships – the Minnehaha, a Cape George 36 launched in 1988 – is Kirsten Neuschäfer who has been adopted by P.E.I.’s sailing community as one of its own. In fact, she and Minnehaha placed third in the Golden Globe Prologue, a mini race from Gijón, Spain to Sables-d’Olonne, intended as a test run for the participants.
Kirsten Neuschäfer and her vessel sailed into Summerside on a frigidly cold January day in 2021. She was quickly adopted by the local sailing community, which helped her realize her dream of participating in the upcoming Golden Globe Race. - Colin MacLean. Her arrival surprised local sailors. It was unheard of for a small yacht to show up that time of year. It was also a bitterly cold week when she arrived, and much of her ship was caked in ice by the time it docked.
Word quickly got around about Neuschäfer and her intention to race around the world and she found herself and her vessel warmly received by the community, especially the local sailing enthusiasts.
