South African authorities seized over R5 million worth of counterfeit and illicit goods during a joint operation in Musina, Limpopo. Three individuals were arrested for dealing in counterfeit goods, with one facing an additional charge of bribery. The operation also resulted in the seizure of a stolen vehicle and drugs.
In a joint operation conducted in Musina, Limpopo, South African authorities seized counterfeit and illicit goods valued at over R5 million. Led by the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, the operation involved a collaborative effort between the South African Police Service (SAPS), crime-fighting partners, and specialized units. The operation included support from the SAPS Gauteng Drone Team, Bloemfontein K9 Unit, South African Revenue Service (customs), and brand protectors.
A search-and-seizure warrant was executed at a shopping mall in Musina's central business district, resulting in the confiscation of over 2,000 counterfeit items. These included sneakers, clothing, cellphone accessories, perfume, and consumables. Three individuals, two Eritrean nationals and one Bangladeshi national, all asylum seekers, were arrested for allegedly dealing in counterfeit goods. The Bangladeshi national faces an additional charge of bribery after allegedly attempting to bribe officers to evade arrest.Furthermore, during the operation, a separate incident occurred where a suspect was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. Police also seized dagga and drugs found abandoned in a taxi after the driver and passengers fled the scene. Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, SAPS spokesperson, emphasized that while the operation primarily focused on addressing crimes associated with illicit mining, the members actively contributed to combating a broader range of criminal activities in the province. SAPS and its partners remain committed to eliminating the illegal trade of counterfeit and illicit goods, which poses risks to consumers, harms legitimate businesses, and undermines the country's economy
