A 36.15% increase in Eskom direct electricity will place a significant financial burden on South Africans, causing some household bills to increase by over R2,400 per month.Nersa released the document in September, confirming earlier reports based on a leaked draft that Eskom hadMyBroadband calculated how much households could expect their Eskom bill to increase based on the requested 2024/25 electricity tariff.
The power utility divides its residential customers into different categories based on the size of supply required. These categories are Homepower one through four. Residential properties consuming 1,200kWh of energy per month will see increases of between R1,885 and R1,969. Residential properties on the Homepower 1 tariff will experience an increase of R2,357, Homepower 2 & 3 an increase of R2,357, and Homepower 4 an increase of R2,462.The state-owned power utility has also requested a tariff hike of 43.55% for residents in municipality-supplied areas next year.
According to Nersa, the application — motivated by primary energy, operating costs, independent power producers, international purchases, and depreciation — will be processed in accordance with its fourth Multi-Year Price Determination methodology.
