Queues for the Queen’s lying-in-state couldn’t be a better example of Britain’s obsession with rules
London’s South Bank was one of the main locations for the 1951 Festival of Britain – an exhibition which celebrated all things “British” in the wake of the Second World War and the ensuing struggle of rebuilding a country devastated by the conflict. The exhibition of British contributions to science, industry, architecture and more was used by a government fast losing support to improve public morale as the reality of the post-war economy started to bite.
There seems to be a place in the collective consciousness for the apparently uniquely British phenomenon of queuing. Of course, waiting your turn happens everywhere in the world, but there’s a difference between joining a line, and joining a British queue. There are unspoken rules; any transgressions are harshly punished. Or at least they would be if any of us could muster more than a tut and a roll of the eyes.
