As the service started, the Dean of Westminster, the Reverend David Hoyle, paid tribute to the Queen’s “long life of selfless service”.

Coach by coach, dignitaries and extended family members arrived at the West Gate but it was the entrance of Joe Biden in his own car – not a bus like other world leaders – that captivated the attention of the watching media. “We had to come to pay our respects” said Sir Paul. “I met the Queen on several occasions, and she was the most engaging of people. “It’s all fun right now, which is great as this is a celebration of Her Majesty’s life too,” said Matt. “But I imagine it will be very different when the cortege passes. I don’t know if I’ll cry. I might do. The occasion my overcome many people here. It will certainly be solemn.”

Ms Heerey, who visited the coffin in Westminster Hall twice, said: “I was the last person to pay my respects to the Queen and it felt like a real privilege to do that. Ms Harper said: “The problem was that we were all lead to believe that you picked up your wristband at the end of the queue. So, we were querying for an hour and a half before they told us there were no more wristbands.”
