This week at CES, Qualcomm is officially launching the next generation of its automotive system-on-a-chip (SoC), the Snapdragon Ride Flex.
The Flex version adds in functionality from the Snapdragon Cockpit and the ability to virtualize and run multiple different operating systems with different levels of criticality. For example ADAS is a safety critical system that runs in real time while the infotainment interface is mostly not safety critical and is not time sensitive .
Moving functionality into a centralized compute platform will also make it easier to do over-the-air software updates to fix issues, and add new functionality. These new architectures will typically use some sort of common operating system and software platform that abstracts applications away from the hardware.
