Even on his crowning weekend, Max Verstappen wasn't the only driver to shine out in Qatar.
Max Verstappen would always steal the limelight in Qatar. His coronation as a three-time Formula One world champion was essentially a formality. And while Verstappen delivered a dominant display on Sunday to secure a 14th win of the season, several other drivers put in stand-out performances. Oscar Piastri scored his first F1 win , while Fernando Alonso and George Russell got the maximum out of their cars as their teammates slipped up.
But this was still a strong weekend for Fernando Alonso. The two-time world champion placed high up the order right through the weekend, even with a car that was probably fifth-quickest. He paid the price for starting on softs in the sprint, falling to eighth at the end, and didn’t have the pace to challenge for any higher than sixth on Sunday. Amid Lance Stroll’s ongoing struggles, this was a weekend where Alonso’s quality made the difference.
